Sox Take Rubber Game

Bogaerts slides in to score as Matt Wieters awaits the throw (Yahoo)
The Boston Red Sox took the final game of their season-opening three game series in Baltimore, beating the Orioles 4-3 to win the rubber game and move into first place in the AL East.

Boston swung the bats well against Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen, pounding him for 12 hits in five and two-thirds innings. Every Red Sox batter collected at least one hit except for Mike Napoli, who went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and a double play. David Ortiz and Xander Bogaerts both had three hits apiece, while Will Middlebrooks and Jackie Bradley, Jr. each went 2-for-4.

The Red Sox certainly could have and should have scored more, but they bounced into three double plays and struggled with runners in scoring position, collecting just two hits in ten such opportunities and leaving nine men on base in all. Nevertheless, four runs was just enough to squeak by the Orioles, who scored three off Felix Doubront but were held scoreless by the Red Sox bullpen as Brandon Workman, Chris Capuano, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara preserved the lead.

Hopefully Boston's bats can remain hot against Milwaukee's Marco Estrada in today's home opener at Fenway Park. Based on how he pitched last fall, Jake Peavy's going to need all the help he can get.
